Thu 1st May 2025 - McDonald’s reports global like-for-likes down 1% in first quarter as UK sees sales fall
McDonald’s reports global like-for-likes down 1% in first quarter as UK sees sales fall: McDonald’s has reported global like-for-likes were down 1% in its first quarter ending 31 March 2025 – with the UK seeing sales fall. Chief executive Chris Kempczinski said: “McDonald's has a 70-year legacy of innovation, leadership, and proven agility, all of which give us confidence in our ability to navigate even the toughest of market conditions and gain market share. Consumers today are grappling with uncertainty, but they can always count on McDonald’s for both exciting new menu items and delicious favourites for exceptional value, from a brand they love.” Systemwide sales to loyalty members across 60 loyalty markets were more than $31bn for the trailing 12-month period and around $8bn for the quarter. First-quarter like-for-likes were down 3.6% in the US, with the results primarily driven by negative comparable guest counts, McDonald’s said. Like-for-like sales in the quarter for the “international operated” segment, which includes the UK, were down 1.0%. McDonald’s said segment performance “reflected mixed results across the markets, primarily impacted by negative comparable sales in the UK”. In the “international developmental” licensed segment, first-quarter like-for-like sales increased 3.5% where positive comparable sales were primarily driven by the Middle East and Japan, the company said. Revenue in the quarter fell 3% to $5.96bn from $6.17bn the previous year. McDonald’s features in the Propel UK Food and Beverage Franchisor Database, which is an exhaustive guide to the companies offering a food and beverage franchise in the UK and is available exclusively to Premium subscribers. The next edition will be sent on Wednesday, 14 May and feature a total of 350 companies.
