Exclusive – Afrikana to make overseas debut after striking deal for initial five stores in Kenya: African restaurant concept Afrikana is to make its overseas debut after striking a deal for an initial five stores in Kenya. It will start its international expansion with a flagship store in the East African country, “marking the beginning of its global journey and a powerful step into the continent that inspired it”. The agreement was facilitated by franchise consultancy Franchise with Us, led by Nil Naik. Founded in 2018, Afrikana currently operates 17 locations across the UK, with a further five sites set to open this year. It operates under City Restaurants Group (CRG), a multi-brand hospitality operator with a combined estate of 20-plus locations nationwide, including concepts such as Mowchi, the seven-strong bubble tea brand, and Detroit pizza brand Crave. Founder Omair Ali said: “We built Afrikana in the UK, but its ambition has always been global. Launching in Kenya is a bold statement, but we’re bringing flavour, energy and experience into one of the most exciting markets in the world. From here, we scale. This is just the beginning.” Afrikana’s expansion into Kenya is being led by master franchise partners Nasra Ali and Abdikadir Mohamud Farah, through Connexus Holding, a Nairobi-based group with established experience in restaurant operations. CRG said the pair’s local market knowledge and operational expertise “position Afrikana for a launch that is both culturally relevant and set up for long-term success”. Nasra Ali said: “We chose Afrikana because it goes beyond food – it’s the flavour, the feeling and the overall experience. There’s a strong sense of identity in the brand, from the menu to the atmosphere, and that’s something we know will resonate with the Kenyan market. We’re excited to introduce that to Kenya and build something truly impactful.” Naik added: “We’re proud to have supported this partnership – this is a significant milestone for Afrikana and a clear reflection of the brand’s international potential. Bringing together an ambitious UK concept with experienced operators in Kenya creates a strong foundation for success.” Propel reported last month that CRG, which last year signed a franchise agreement with Dubai multi-brand operator Yolk Brands to launch fried chicken brand BonBird into the UK, had begun to build a pipeline for the concept by lining up stores in London’s Peckham and Kentish Town, and is also in talks on a site in Brixton. The previous month, Afrikana said it is set to open a flagship West End restaurant in London’s Baker Street. It secured a deal with landlord Portman Estate for a 2,700 square-foot, 98-cover restaurant, including an alfresco terrace, at 112 Edgware Road. Afrikana, BonBird and Mowchi all feature in the UK Food & Beverage Franchisor Database, one of six databases available exclusively to Premium Club subscribers. A Premium Club subscription costs an annual sum of £495 plus VAT for operators and £595 plus VAT for suppliers. Companies can now have an unlimited number of people receive access to Premium Club for a year for £995 plus VAT – whether they are an operator or supplier. A new Premium Unlimited Plus option, which costs £1,995 plus VAT per annum, has some amazing additional benefits including four free tickets to Propel’s paid-for conferences – Excellence in Pub & Bar (19 May), Operational Excellence (9 July) and Talent & Training (15 October) – and the opportunity to run one free sponsored message or situation vacant notice during the year on the newsletter. Greggs hires new customer and marketing director: Food-to-go operator Greggs has hired Zoe Harris as its new customer and marketing director. Harris, who is chief customer officer at On The Beach, is taking over from Hannah Squirrell, who has stepped down after more than nine years in the role following her retirement. Harris wrote in a post in LinkedIn that she will join Greggs in May. She said: “Incredibly grateful for the chapter I’ve had, and excited for the one ahead. Two brilliant brands, businesses and teams.” Harris joined On The Beach in January 2021. Previously, she was chief marketing officer at GoCompare Group for two and a half years, before which she was group marketing director at Reach for almost six years. She also held roles at WCRS, Channel 5 and MTV. Last month, Greggs said it has started 2026 strongly, with a healthy pipeline of openings, after reporting a 6.8% rise in sales but a fall in profitability in 2025. For the year to 27 December 2025, the company said total sales were up to £2.15bn compared with £2.01bn the previous year, with like-for-like sales in company-managed shops up 2.4% year-on-year. Statutory profit before tax was down 17.9% to £167.4m from £203.9m the year before. Greggs chief executive Roisin Currie will be among the speakers at the Propel Multi-Club Female Leaders and Entrepreneurs Conference on Thursday, 4 June at Park Plaza Victoria London. The all-day conference, which is organised in conjunction with Ann Elliott, will feature an all-female line-up of sector leaders. Currie will talk about her leadership style and the company’s emphasis on nurturing and protecting a strong internal culture. For the full speaker schedule, click here. Operators can book up to three free places per company while Premium subscribers who are operators can book up to four free places. To book, email kai.kirkman@propelinfo.com.
Cyril Lignac relocates his debut UK site, in London’s Mayfair: French chef Cyril Lignac has relocated his debut UK site, in London’s Mayfair. Bar des Prés Mayfair, originally the concept's first international venture, opened in Albemarle Street in January 2021. It will now relocate to a new address at 41 South Audley Street, opening on Thursday, 7 May. The restaurant will continue to offer its “distinctive blend of French savoir-faire and East-Asian influence”, showcasing “seasonal and expertly sourced ingredients”. Dishes include crunchy crab and avocado galette, marinated sea bass with yuzu, dry miso and rocoto, and beef gyoza with ginger and soy. There will also be a cocktail list alongside an extensive French wine list. Behind the restaurant, The Salon at Bar des Prés will offer an intimate setting for private dining and special celebrations which can host up to 30 guests across three tables, or 22 guests on a single table. Lignac said: “London has always been a very special place for Bar des Prés, especially as it was the first location we opened outside France. With South Audley Street, we wanted to create something that feels both familiar and new – a space where guests can enjoy the energy of the original, while discovering a different expression of the cuisine, the cocktails and the design. While we bring the same excellent quality that we are known for, it feels like a new beginning.”
