Gastro-operators plan 12,000 sq ft world class fashion and culinary hub: Barry Hurst and Stefan Turnbull, who operate three Cubbitt House gastro-pubs and restaurants in Belgravia, have secured the lease on the 12,000 square foot Pantechnicon building in Belgravia through their Pantechnicon (London) vehicle to create a fashion and hospitality emporium, including a cafe, restaurant and bar. The building, owned by Grosvenor, dates from 1830 and was designed in the ‘Greek Revival’ style with Doric columns facing the street. It has a Grade II Historic England listing. The building’s renovations, designed by British-based architects Aukett Swanke, will see the new food and retail emporium set over six floors, including a basement and a south-facing roof terrace. Turnbull said: “Barry and I are delighted to have been chosen for this exciting project and we very much look forward to working with Grosvenor. The relationship between retail and hospitality continues to evolve in order to meet ever more sophisticated customer expectations and we look forward to the challenge of creating a world class food and shopping experience in Belgravia. This is a good news story for Motcomb Street, to which a revived Pantechnicon will bring vibrancy and enhanced footfall.” Simon Elmer, location director, North Belgravia at Grosvenor Britain & Ireland said: “This is terrific news for both Motcomb Street and Belgravia. Stefan and Barry have over ten years’ experience of operating successful venues in Belgravia and have a real feel for, and understanding of, the area’s reputation as a special and unique place to visit. We think they will do an excellent job turning the Pantechnicon into a fashion and culinary hub, attracting people from around London and beyond. We have a long-term interest in making Motcomb Street a great place to live, work and visit and the Pantechnicon will be another major step towards this.” The renovation of Pantechnicon will begin later this year, with the opening scheduled for early 2017. Grosvenor also intends to improve public areas in Motcomb Street ahead of the opening and will be working on designs in consultation with Westminster City Council and the local community in the coming months.
