Mon 23rd Jan 2023 - Kerb to open debut international food hall, in Berlin
Kerb to open debut international food hall, in Berlin: Street food collective Kerb has secured its debut international site. It will launch the follow-up to its first food hall, Seven Dials Market in London, with an opening in Berlin. It will convert the IMAX cinema at the Sony Centre am Potsdamer Platz in the German capital into a two-storey food and drink venue inspired by the building’s cinematic heritage, and “showcasing the very best of Berlin’s world class food and drink scene”. The venue is due to launch in 2024 and will create more than 200 jobs. Kerb plans to hire a Berlin-based team to lead the operation, “and work with the very best Berlin vendors and German wine and beer producers to build a food hall befitting the cultural diversity and culinary deliciousness of the city”. The space will span 2,200 square metres and will play host to 12 independent food operators, which Kerb is now seeking, and four bars. Like in London, Kerb will develop an incubation and accelerator programme for local owner-operated businesses, offering a spread of live workshops and consultations alongside a digital training platform “to develop the very best food talent coming out of the city”. Kerb said social and environmental sustainability will also be “high on the agenda with progressive and wide-reaching targets” focusing on lower carbon footprint, locality and reuse. Simon Mitchell, chief executive of Kerb, said: “Kerb’s vision has always been to bring joy to unexpected locations, breathing life, colour and deliciousness into the urban fabric. We are delighted to be working with the Sony Centre to develop a world-beating food hall in the heart of Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz, in a brilliant building, working alongside the very best of the Berlin food scene. We are looking forward to becoming a major part of the fabric of the city, supporting the wider neighbourhood development in bringing world class arts, culture and hospitality back to Potsdamer Platz.” Seven Dials Market plays host to 25,000 customers a week, provides 300 jobs and generates revenue of £15m a year. James Bell, of Gillingham Bell International, advised Oxford Properties and Norges Bank Investment Managers on the Sony Center, Berlin. Nick Marks, of NCM Projects, advised Kerb.
