Thu 27th Jul 2023 - McDonald’s reports global like-for-likes up 11.7% in second quarter with strong UK growth
McDonald’s reports global like-for-likes up 11.7% in second quarter with strong UK growth: McDonald’s has reported global like-for-likes were up 11.7% in its second quarter ending 30 June 2023 – with the UK seeing “strong” growth. Chief executive Chris Kempczinski said: “Our second quarter results reflect consistently strong execution of our Accelerating the Arches strategy, with global like-for-like sales growth of 11.7% and double-digit comparable sales growth across each of our segments. The McDonald’s brand has never been stronger and I remain inspired by the ability of the McDonald’s system to create cultural conversations and develop industry-leading innovations. While global macroeconomic challenges persist, we continue to invest in our growth drivers and our brand to meet the customer needs of tomorrow.” Digital systemwide sales were more than $8bn in the company's top six markets, representing almost 40% of their total systemwide sales. Second quarter like-for-likes were up 10.3% in the US, with the results benefiting from “strategic menu price increases and positive guest counts”. Successful restaurant level execution, culturally relevant brand and marketing campaigns and continued digital and delivery growth contributed to strong comparable sales results, the company said. Like-for-like sales in the quarter for the “international operated” segment, which includes the UK, were up 11.9%. McDonald’s said segment performance was driven by strong like-for-like sales in most markets, led by the UK and Germany. In the “international developmental” licensed segment, second quarter like-for-like sales were up 14%. The company said the quarter reflected strong like-for-like sales in all geographic regions, led by China. Total revenue in the quarter increased 14% to $ 6,497.5m from $ 5,718.4m the year before.
